Rejected means the IRS did not accept your extension. You may be able to correct the issue and resubmit it.
How to correct and resubmit
- Sign in and open My Tax Filings.
- Open the filing marked Rejected.
- Select Correct and Resubmit.
- Read the IRS rejection reason, correct the flagged information, and submit the corrected filing.
Common reasons an extension is rejected
- A taxpayer name, Social Security number, EIN, or date of birth does not match IRS records.
- A business name or return type is incorrect.
- Payment information needs to be corrected or removed before resubmission.
Important timing information
Correct the filing as soon as possible. If a timely e-filed extension is rejected after the original due date, the IRS may allow a limited correction period.
That period does not make a new extension filed after the original due date timely, and it does not extend the time to pay tax owed.
What not to do
- Do not submit another filing while the status is Pending.
- Support cannot override an IRS rejection or mark a filing accepted.
- Do not share your full Social Security number or other sensitive tax information in chat.
Your filing is complete only when My Tax Filings shows “Accepted by IRS.”
