An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a 9 digit tax processing number issued by the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) to individuals who do not have or are not eligible to obtain a SSN (Social Security Number) from the Social Security Administration.  The ITIN is used by individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number for the purpose of federal tax reporting.
