Can I get a refund for a tax extension purchase?

Modified on Fri, 16 Oct at 4:10 PM

Refund eligibility depends on what happened to the extension filing.

If the IRS rejected the extension as a duplicate

Contact Support to request a review. Support will review the filing and refund request; submitting a request does not guarantee approval.

If the IRS accepted the extension

An accepted extension is generally not refundable, even if you later learn that another extension was already on file or you no longer need the extension.

If you see two card entries

A temporary card authorization and a completed charge can appear separately. Check whether both entries are completed charges before assuming you were billed twice.

If you believe there are two completed charges, contact Support with the transaction details for review.

After an approved refund

You will receive a refund notification. Your card issuer or bank may take several days to show the credit.

Note: Filing your tax return after purchasing an extension does not cancel an accepted extension or make it refundable.
