The correct extension depends on how your LLC is taxed by the IRS, not just its number of owners.
- Single-member LLC taxed as a disregarded entity with an individual owner: Generally, file personal Form 4868 using the owner's SSN, not the LLC EIN.
- LLC taxed as an S corporation: File Form 7004 for Form 1120-S, even with one owner.
- LLC taxed as a partnership: File Form 7004 for Form 1065.
- LLC taxed as a C corporation: File Form 7004 for Form 1120.
An LLC owned by spouses in a community property state may qualify for special disregarded-entity treatment; this is not automatic.
Not sure how your LLC is taxed? Check which federal return it normally files or ask your tax preparer before selecting an extension. An owner may also need a separate personal extension for their own Form 1040.
