How to Find Your Prior-Year AGI (Adjusted Gross Income) for IRS Payment PIN

How do I find my Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) from last year?

To make an electronic payment to the IRS, you may be required to verify your identity by creating a PIN, which often requires your prior-year Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). Your AGI is listed on your previous year’s federal tax return. Follow the steps below to locate your AGI and complete your payment.

Step 1: Find your AGI on last year’s Form 1040

Locate your prior-year federal tax return (Form 1040). Your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) is shown on: Form 1040 – Line 11

Step 2: Use your AGI to create your IRS payment PIN

Enter the prior-year AGI when prompted to create a PIN and submit your payment to the IRS.

Step 3: If you don’t have last year’s tax return, request a transcript

If you cannot locate your prior-year return, you can request an IRS tax return transcript (which includes your AGI).
Call the IRS transcript line at 800-908-9946 to request a mailed transcript.
Please note: delivery may take 5–10 business days.

Step 4: If you can’t find your AGI, choose a different payment method

If you are unable to obtain your prior-year AGI in time, you may be able to switch your payment method to check payment, which eliminates the need for an electronic payment PIN/AGI verification.

Step 5: Mail your IRS payment by check (if applicable)

If paying by check, mail your payment to the IRS and include the following in the memo line:

  • Your SSN

  • Form 4868 (if submitting an extension payment)

This helps the IRS apply the payment correctly.
