Your extension filing and your tax payment are related but separate.
A filing extension gives more time to file. It does not give more time to pay.
If your extension is rejected because of payment information
- Open My Tax Filings and select the filing marked Rejected.
- Choose Correct and Resubmit.
- Correct the payment information, or remove the payment and pay the IRS separately.
Correcting or removing payment information does not extend the original payment deadline.
If your card or bank payment is declined or returned
A declined or returned payment does not, by itself, tell you whether the IRS accepted the extension. Check the filing status in My Tax Filings:
- Accepted by IRS: the extension was accepted.
- Pending: do not submit another extension while the IRS response is pending.
- Rejected: correct the filing before resubmitting.
- Draft: the filing was not submitted.
Can I change a submitted payment?
Once an extension is submitted, you generally cannot edit the payment amount on that submission. If the filing was rejected, use Correct and Resubmit. If it was accepted, make any additional payment directly to the IRS as appropriate.
