If you and your spouse will file a joint federal income tax return, one accepted personal tax extension generally covers your joint return.
If only one spouse was listed on the extension, that spouse should be listed as the primary taxpayer when you file the joint return.
If you expect to file Married Filing Separately, the safer approach is for each spouse to file a separate personal extension.
If you both filed separate extensions but later decide to file jointly, those accepted extensions do not prevent a joint return.
An extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay taxes owed.
