Federal tax filing deadlines and extensions

Modified on Fri, 16 Oct at 7:54 PM

Federal filing deadlines vary by return type and tax year. Check IRS.gov for the current federal deadline that applies to your return. If you need more time to file, an extension must generally be submitted by the original federal due date. An extension gives more time to file; it does not extend the time to pay any tax due. For individual federal extensions, use Form 4868. Eligible business extensions generally use Form 7004. TaxExtension.com can help with an extension filing, account access, and extension status. This article does not provide tax-return preparation, amendment, estimated-payment, refund-election, or individualized tax advice. For those questions, use an official IRS resource or a qualified tax professional.
