Business tax deadlines, Form 7004 extensions, and late filing

Modified on Fri, 16 Oct at 4:29 PM

Short answer: Form 7004 can provide additional time to file certain business returns. It does not extend the time to pay tax due.

Requesting a business extension

File Form 7004 on or before the due date of the business return for which you need additional time. The applicable due date and extension period depend on the return type, entity, tax year, and any IRS exception. Check the current IRS instructions rather than relying on a fixed date.

File a separate Form 7004 for each return that needs an extension. Estimate and pay any tax due by the original due date.

If the deadline has already passed

Submitting Form 7004 after the return’s original due date generally does not create an extension. File the business return as soon as possible and pay any balance due. If the IRS later sends a penalty notice, the taxpayer may respond with any applicable reasonable-cause explanation.

If a Form 7004 is rejected

Review the exact rejection code and filing details in My Tax Filings, correct the identified issue, and resubmit promptly. Do not promise a universal correction period: whether a filing is timely depends on the filing record and applicable IRS rules.
