What happens if my IRS tax payment causes my extension to be rejected?

Modified on Tue, 13 Oct at 7:45 PM

If you included a federal tax payment with your extension and the IRS rejects the payment information, the entire extension is rejected.

For example, the prior-year adjusted gross income (AGI) used for payment verification may not match IRS records.

You can correct the payment information and resubmit. Or remove the IRS payment and resubmit your extension without it. Removing the payment also removes its bank information.

The IRS withdraws the payment only if the extension is accepted. A rejected extension does not result in that IRS withdrawal.

If you resubmit without a tax payment, pay the IRS separately at IRS Payments.

An extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. Late payments may result in penalties and interest.
