How long does a tax extension give me?

Modified on Mon, 8 Jun at 11:32 AM

A personal extension (Form 4868) gives you 6 additional months to file, moving your deadline from April 15 to October 15.

Business extensions (Form 7004):

  • S-Corps and partnerships: 6 months, extended to September 15
  • C-Corps: 6 months, extended to October 15

Extensions only extend the time to file your return — taxes owed are still due on the original deadline.
