Does my federal extension cover my state taxes too?

Not automatically. A federal extension (Form 4868) does not automatically extend your state filing deadline.

Each state handles extensions differently:

  • Some states automatically accept your federal extension — no separate state filing required.
  • Other states require you to file a separate state extension form.
  • A few states have no income tax (Florida, Texas, Nevada, etc.).

We support state extension filing for most states — you can add it during checkout. See our State Tax Extension guides for details on your specific state.
