Does an extension give me more time to pay?

Modified on Tue, 20 Dec, 2022 at 2:17 PM

Filing a personal tax extension, IRS form 4868, grants you an extension of time to file your tax return.  It does not extend the time to pay any taxes that may be owed.  Tax payments are due no later than the tax return deadline, which is April 15th.

If you feel you may owe taxes when you file your extension, you can make your best estimate of what you owe and pay all or what you can when you submit your extension.
