Do I need a separate state extension, and how can I confirm it?

Modified on Fri, 16 Oct at 4:10 PM

A federal extension does not automatically extend every state return.

State rules differ: some states accept a federal extension, some grant an automatic state filing extension, and others require a separate state form or payment.

Before you rely on a federal extension

  1. Select your state in the state-extension guidance.
  2. Confirm whether the state requires its own extension form, payment, or both.
  3. Check the state filing and payment deadlines.

Remember: a state extension generally gives more time to file, not more time to pay.

How to keep proof

If you file a state extension through this service, open My Tax Filings and use Download PDF to save your record. Keep any mailing proof or payment confirmation as well.

Sending a paper state form or saving a copy does not necessarily confirm that the state accepted it. For final confirmation, follow the process provided by that state tax agency.

Federal filing: My Tax Filings showing Accepted by IRS confirms that the IRS accepted the federal extension.
