Your Filing Status
You've Been Extended
Your Maryland return is extended to October 15, 2026. File now to get your refund faster.
Maryland grants an automatic six-month extension for filing personal income tax returns to taxpayers who have received a federal extension from the IRS and owe no Maryland income tax. If both conditions are met, the filing deadline moves from April 15, 2026, to October 15, 2026—no separate Maryland form required.
If You Owe Maryland Tax: Use Form PVIf you owe Maryland income tax, the automatic extension alone is not sufficient. You must file Form PV (Personal Tax Payment Voucher) and submit payment of your Maryland tax liability by April 15, 2026. Failure to pay the full amount owed by April 15 may result in penalties and interest on the unpaid balance, even if a federal extension has been filed.
How to Make Extension Payments- ACH Debit (BillPay): Visit www.marylandtaxes.gov and select BillPay. The amount will be deducted from your bank account on your chosen date.
- Credit / Debit Card: Call 1-800-2-PAY-TAX (1-800-272-9829) or log on to egov.maryland.gov. A convenience fee is charged based on the payment amount.
For mail-in payments, use Form PV (Personal Tax Payment Voucher). Mail the form with payment to:

Maryland imposes penalties of up to 25% of unpaid tax for both failure to file and failure to pay. Both penalties can apply simultaneously, so ensuring your balance is paid by April 15 and your return is filed by October 15 is essential.
Best Practices- File IRS Form 4868 first—Maryland's automatic extension requires it.
- If you owe Maryland tax, file Form PV and pay in full by April 15, 2026—the automatic extension alone does not cover taxpayers with a balance due.
- Use maryland-taxes.gov BillPay for ACH debit—choose your own payment date and get instant confirmation.
- Save all payment confirmations and a copy of your Form PV for your records.
Maryland's extension requires both a federal extension and no outstanding Maryland tax balance. If you owe tax, Form PV and full payment are due by April 15. File your return by October 15, 2026.
