Illinois's Automatic Extension

Illinois provides an automatic six-month extension for filing personal income tax returns. No paper or electronic extension request is required. Taxpayers who cannot file by April 15, 2026, are automatically granted until October 15, 2026, to file. However, Illinois requires 100% of your tax liability to be paid by the original due date—a stricter requirement than most states.

100% Payment Required by April 15

Illinois does not allow a partial payment under the extension. The full amount of your Illinois income tax liability must be paid using Form IL-505-I by April 15, 2026. If you do not pay in full by this date, you may be subject to late payment penalties and interest on the unpaid balance, even if you have an automatic extension in place.

Important: Attach Your Federal Extension When Filing

When you file your Illinois return by October 15, you must attach a copy of your federal extension (IRS Form 4868) to the state return. Keep a copy of your filed Form 4868 to include with your Illinois return.

How to Make Extension Payments

Illinois offers multiple payment options:

  • ACH Debit (MyTax Illinois): Go to mytax.illinois.gov. Requires your bank routing and account number plus an Illinois PIN. No fee.
  • Credit Card (Phone): Call Official Payments Corporation (833-747-1434), Value Payment Systems (888-972-9457), or FIS (877-578-2937). A convenience fee is assessed.
Using Form IL-505-I

Form IL-505-I (Automatic Extension Payment for Individuals) is used when mailing your extension payment. Mail the form with payment to:
Illinois Department of Revenue
P.O. Box 19005
Springfield, IL 62794-9005

Late Filing and Payment Penalties

Illinois late filing penalties are the lesser of $250 or 2% of tax liability if filed within 30 days late; or the greater of $250 or 2% up to $5,000 if not filed within 30 days of a notice. Late payment carries a 2% penalty for payments 1–30 days late, and 10% for payments 31 or more days late.

Best Practices
  • Pay 100% of your Illinois tax liability by April 15, 2026—partial payment is not sufficient under Illinois rules.
  • Use MyTax Illinois for ACH debit—fastest and most secure payment method.
  • Attach a copy of your federal Form 4868 when you file your Illinois return by October 15.
  • Save all payment confirmations and a copy of Form IL-505-I for your records.
Final Thoughts

Illinois's automatic extension requires no application, but demands full payment by April 15—stricter than most states. Pay your full liability using Form IL-505-I or MyTax Illinois, attach your federal extension to your return, and file by October 15, 2026.
